Schaefer urges Thai protest

Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer has asked the Football Association of Thailand to file a formal protest with the the Asean Football Federation against Malaysia following their 1-1 draw in the Suzuki Cup semi-final first leg in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

The German was sent off at Bukit Jalil and will be banned from the bench in the return leg at Supachalasai Stadium on Thursday. He said he shouted to give his players instructions but match officials misunderstood that he scolded them.

He also asked the FAT to protest a Thai fan being hit by a flare and Malaysian fans aiming laser beams at Thai players.

“The AFF should punish them for doing this,” Schaefer said.

He said the incidents would spur his players in the Bangkok leg against the defending champions.

“We will do our best to get a clear-cut result. I’d like Thai fans to pack the stadium,” he said.

The winners will meet Singapore or the Philippines in a two-legged final for the biggest prize in Southeast Asian football. Singapore will host the second leg tomorrow after the first match in Manila ended in a scoreless draw.

Thailand and Singapore have each won the Asean title three times. The Thais last won the biennial championship 10 years ago and were eliminated in the first round in 2010.
